HITECH: A supplemental act was passed in 2009 called The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act which supports the enforcement of HIPAA requirements by raising the penalties of health organizations that violate HIPAA Privacy and Security Rules. The HITECH Act was formed in response to health technology developments and increased use, storage, and transmission of electronic health information.
HIPAA OMNIBUS: also known as the Final rule, extended the law to include regulations for Business Associates, like labs, clearing houses, unsupervised after-hours services, messaging centers, and their subcontractors. The Omnibus also further defined the breach reporting protocols.
