What is Biosecurity ?

Biosecurity is theactions we take to prevent or control diseases of animals and humans, biosecurity refers to measures that are taken to stop the spread harmful organisms to human, animal and plant life. The main purposes of biosecurity are to protect human health and to increase and protect agricultural produce through the prevention, control and organisation of biological risk elements.

The actions taken are combination of developments and structures that have been put in place by bioscience research laboratory, public departments and agricultural leaders to stop the use of dangerous pathogens and toxins.

Why should we care?
• Prevent animals illness and suffering.
• Prevent zoonotic diseases.
• Prevent economic loss.
• Keep food prices low for consumers.
• Keep good public opinion.
• Keep interstate and international trade open.
What types of diseases do we try to prevent or control with biosecurity?
Infectious diseases caused by bacteria, fungi, parasites, prions, and viruses.
Disease occurs when the right agent and the right host are together in the right environment.
We use biosecurity to prevent disease accidents from happening.
